Post-Market Recap — Wednesday, August 5, 2026

U.S. stocks finished mixed near record territory. The Dow gained roughly 0.8%, the S&P 500 was little changed, and the Nasdaq fell about 0.4% as strength in healthcare, travel and selected large-cap names offset weakness in AI-related stocks.

SpaceX and AMD declined despite better-than-expected results, as investors focused on elevated spending, margins and whether recent gains already reflected optimistic AI expectations. Disney, Booking Holdings and Eli Lilly advanced following favorable earnings and outlook updates.

Economic data sent mixed signals. ADP reported just 44,000 private-sector jobs added in July, below expectations, while the ISM services index edged up to 54.1. Strong orders but rising input costs and contracting services employment complicated the Federal Reserve outlook. The 10-year Treasury yield held near 4.62%, while the dollar eased modestly.

Oil was little changed as markets weighed possible progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz against continuing uncertainty surrounding Iran. Gold surged roughly 4% as geopolitical concerns supported safe-haven demand.

What traders should watch next: Thursday’s jobless claims and productivity data, additional earnings reactions, and Friday’s employment report. Markets will also remain sensitive to oil, Treasury yields and any confirmed development in U.S.-Iran negotiations.
