GOOG: A Small Loss—and an Important Order-Flow Lesson

Our GOOG plan called for a short as the price moved from the central pivot toward the lower volatility bands. Instead, the stock opened sharply below the pivot and immediately reversed, producing a powerful rally of roughly $12 from its opening low.

After GOOG retraced and began consolidating beneath the central pivot, we attempted the planned short with a deliberately tight stop. The trade failed, resulting in a loss of approximately $1 per share—but the limited risk was appropriate given what Bookmap was revealing.

Nearly 2 million shares traded near the pivot, with no meaningful sell-side liquidity appearing on the order book. Price seemed temporarily contained by algorithmic activity rather than genuine overhead supply. Above the pivot, the liquidity map showed large open spaces with very little resistance, while a substantial buy order remained below the market.

The message was clear: if GOOG broke above the pivot and the remaining sell liquidity began to pull, price would have an easy path higher. That is exactly why the trade required a tight stop. Although the short did not work, recognizing the lack of overhead liquidity kept the loss manageable and prevented it from running through the entire volatility-band range.

Today's Trading Recap

Post-Market Wrap — September 9, 2026

Wall Street finished lower Wednesday as oil broke above $100 per barrel, reviving inflation concerns and pushing Treasury yields higher. The S&P 500 lost 0.48%, the Nasdaq fell 0.64%, and the Dow dropped 0.77%, while the Russell 2000 underperformed with a 1.3% decline. (Reuters)

The dominant story was energy. Brent crude surged 3.4% to $101.21, while WTI climbed to $96.05, as escalating tensions involving Iran and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns about global supply. Energy was the only positive S&P sector, gaining roughly 1.1%. (Reuters)

Higher oil prices immediately fed the market’s bigger concern: inflation and interest rates. The 10-year Treasury yield pushed toward 4.85%, adding pressure to growth stocks as traders looked ahead to the week’s inflation data and reassessed the possibility of another Fed rate hike. (AP News)

Among the notable individual movers, META jumped more than 6% following the unveiling of its new AI assistant, while GOOGL fell about 2.3% amid news of significant new AI infrastructure spending. AAPL slipped 0.3% following its latest product launch. Energy names including XOM and CVX benefited from the oil spike, while consumer-sensitive names such as AMZN and SBUX were pressured. (Reuters)

Trading takeaway: September 9 was primarily a macro-driven risk-off session. Oil, yields and geopolitical headlines overwhelmed company-specific catalysts across most of the market. The exception was META, which demonstrated that a sufficiently strong AI catalyst could still overpower the broader tape. With inflation data immediately ahead, traders had good reason to remain selective rather than chase index moves.
