GOOG: A Small Loss—and an Important Order-Flow Lesson

Our GOOG plan called for a short as the price moved from the central pivot toward the lower volatility bands. Instead, the stock opened sharply below the pivot and immediately reversed, producing a powerful rally of roughly $12 from its opening low.

After GOOG retraced and began consolidating beneath the central pivot, we attempted the planned short with a deliberately tight stop. The trade failed, resulting in a loss of approximately $1 per share—but the limited risk was appropriate given what Bookmap was revealing.

Nearly 2 million shares traded near the pivot, with no meaningful sell-side liquidity appearing on the order book. Price seemed temporarily contained by algorithmic activity rather than genuine overhead supply. Above the pivot, the liquidity map showed large open spaces with very little resistance, while a substantial buy order remained below the market.

The message was clear: if GOOG broke above the pivot and the remaining sell liquidity began to pull, price would have an easy path higher. That is exactly why the trade required a tight stop. Although the short did not work, recognizing the lack of overhead liquidity kept the loss manageable and prevented it from running through the entire volatility-band range.

Today's Trading Recap

Post-Market Wrap — September 10, 2026

Wall Street extended its losing streak Thursday as surging oil prices and rapidly rising Treasury yields kept inflation concerns front and center. The S&P 500 fell 0.6%, the Nasdaq lost 0.7%, and the Dow declined 0.6%. Small caps remained under even more pressure, with the Russell 2000 down 1.0%. (AP News)

The biggest driver remained energy prices. Brent crude briefly pushed above $108 per barrel as the ongoing conflict with Iran continued to disrupt global oil flows. That renewed fears that higher fuel and transportation costs could keep inflation elevated longer than expected. (AP News)

The bond market amplified the pressure. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to roughly 4.95%, approaching the psychologically important 5% level and sitting nearly a full percentage point above where it stood before the Iran conflict began. Higher yields weighed especially heavily on growth stocks and other rate-sensitive areas of the market. (AP News)

Thursday’s inflation data did little to calm those concerns. Producer prices were relatively contained, but still firm enough that markets increased expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at next week’s meeting. Investors were also positioning cautiously ahead of Friday’s CPI report, which had become the market’s next major catalyst. (Reuters)

Closing levels: the S&P 500 finished at 7,591.70, the Dow at 52,064.10, the Nasdaq at 26,081.72, and the Russell 2000 at 2,890.95. This marked the fourth consecutive decline for the S&P 500. (AP News)

Trading takeaway: September 10 remained a macro-first trading environment. Oil, inflation expectations, and the relentless move higher in yields continued to dictate direction more than individual company fundamentals. With the 10-year pressing toward 5% and CPI due the next morning, the best approach was to stay selective, respect the broader risk-off tape, and avoid forcing trades ahead of a potentially market-moving inflation report.
