Akamai’s $11.6 Billion Anthropic Deal: What Investors Should Watch

Akamai Technologies has expanded its cloud relationship with Anthropic through an $11.6 billion contractual commitment over seven years. The agreement gives Akamai a much larger role in supplying the infrastructure behind AI applications. It also commits the company to substantial spending before the full value of the contract is earned.

Announced September 24, 2026, the agreement is designed to meet Anthropic’s growing demand for CPU computing capacity using Akamai’s distributed cloud infrastructure and software. That distinction matters: the deal is focused on CPU workloads, even as AI infrastructure headlines often center on the GPUs used to train and run models.

The Deal Could Grow, but the Additional $9 Billion Is Conditional

The companies may expand the relationship by up to another $9 billion, bringing its potential value to roughly $20 billion. Investors should treat that additional amount as an opportunity, rather than revenue or a commitment already secured. Akamai’s filing says the current $11.6 billion commitment is subject to delivery and service availability requirements, and the project plans carry specified termination rights.

The size of the agreement stands out against Akamai’s current cloud business. In the second quarter of 2026, its Cloud Infrastructure Services unit produced $99 million in revenue, up 39% from a year earlier. The new commitment points to a possible step change in that business over time, provided Akamai builds and operates the required capacity successfully.

Akamai Must Spend Heavily to Deliver

Akamai estimates approximately $5.5 billion in total capital expenditures tied to the $11.6 billion commitment. The company expects the agreement to increase 2026 capital spending by about $1.7 billion as it secures components, including memory. It does not expect the deal to change its 2026 revenue guidance.

That timing is central to the investment case. Akamai must fund and deploy infrastructure ahead of much of the related revenue. A large contract value by itself does not establish its eventual profit margin or cash return. Investors will need to track spending, service launches, revenue recognition, and cash generation as the buildout proceeds.

Anthropic Gains a Path to an Equity Stake

As part of the arrangement, Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant to buy nonvoting convertible preferred stock representing up to about 7.7 million common shares on an as-converted basis, or approximately 5% of shares outstanding. The stated exercise price is equivalent to $111.33 per common share.

A portion representing about 2% of shares outstanding is tied to the current agreement. The remaining tranches depend on additional commitments, with roughly 1% vesting for each further $3 billion in contractual value. If exercised, the warrant could dilute existing shareholders, while also giving Anthropic a financial interest in the relationship’s expansion.

The Investor Test: Execution and Returns

For Akamai, the Anthropic agreement validates demand for its cloud platform and could make Cloud Infrastructure Services a larger part of the company. It also increases reliance on a major AI customer and raises the stakes for reliable delivery.

The next useful evidence will come from how quickly contracted capacity enters service, how much capital the rollout consumes, and whether cloud revenue growth turns into durable free cash flow. The announcement establishes the scale of the opportunity. Akamai’s execution will determine its value to shareholders.
