Chip Stocks Tumble as Investors Question the Durability of the AI Boom
Global semiconductor and memory stocks suffered another sharp reversal as investors reassessed the sustainability of artificial intelligence spending, rising capital expenditures and aggressive production expansion.
The AI semiconductor sell-off intensified as some of the market’s biggest recent winners extended their losses ahead of earnings reports from several major Silicon Valley companies. The retreat briefly pushed the Nasdaq 100 more than 10% below its early-June high, placing the technology-heavy index in correction territory before it recovered part of the decline.
The Nasdaq 100 fell as much as 1.8% during the session before narrowing its loss to approximately 0.8%. The intraday recovery offered some relief, but the underlying action reflected a significant shift in investor sentiment toward the companies that powered the market higher during the first half of 2026.
Memory Stocks Lead the Decline
Memory-chip companies remained at the center of the selling pressure. Sandisk plunged another 14% after falling 11% during the previous session. The stock has now lost more than half its value during July, although it remains more than four times higher than it was at the beginning of 2026.
Western Digital and Micron each declined approximately 9%, while Advanced Micro Devices fell roughly 7%. These moves suggest investors are no longer treating every company connected to artificial intelligence infrastructure as an automatic beneficiary of expanding AI demand.
The severity of the AI semiconductor sell-off also demonstrates how quickly momentum can reverse when heavily owned stocks begin breaking important technical levels. Once institutional investors start reducing exposure, crowded positions can experience rapid declines as momentum traders, leveraged funds and short-term participants respond to the same weakening price signals.
Apple Emerges as a Relative Safe Haven
Apple stood out as one of the few major technology winners during the broader decline. Its shares rose as much as 1.3%, lifting the company’s market capitalization above $5 trillion for the first time.
Apple became only the second company to reach that valuation threshold, following Nvidia. The milestone came one day after Apple moved ahead of Nvidia to reclaim its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company for the first time since May 2025.
The relative strength in Apple suggests investors may be rotating toward technology companies with established consumer ecosystems, dependable cash generation and less direct exposure to the increasingly expensive race to build AI infrastructure.
Investors Question AI Spending and Free Cash Flow
Semiconductor stocks powered global markets higher during the first half of the year as investors anticipated enormous demand for chips, memory, data centers and related infrastructure. That enthusiasm is now being tested by concerns about how the spending will be financed and whether the eventual returns will justify the scale of the investment.
Venu Krishna, head of U.S. equity strategy at Barclays, said concerns surrounding funding uncertainty, increasing capital expenditures and the effect on Big Tech free cash flow had moved to the center of the market’s attention.
Marija Veitmane, head of equity research at State Street, similarly pointed to investor anxiety over additional borrowing, higher capital expenditures and the long-term sustainability of the current investment cycle. She warned that negative momentum was beginning to build.
Those concerns are central to the AI semiconductor sell-off. Investors are not necessarily concluding that artificial intelligence demand will disappear. Instead, they are questioning whether current valuations properly account for the cost of building the infrastructure, the possibility of slower returns and the risk that too much capacity could eventually be brought online.
Semiconductor Weakness Spreads Across Global Markets
The decline was not limited to U.S. markets. In Europe, ASML, the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductor-production equipment, fell 2.9%.
Asian markets experienced even more severe losses. South Korea’s Kospi dropped more than 10%, triggering a temporary trading halt as investors aggressively sold shares of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.
SK Hynix fell 14.6%, while Samsung Electronics declined 13.4%. Both stocks have lost more than one-third of their value during July, although they remain substantially higher for the year. SK Hynix is still up approximately 138% in 2026, while Samsung remains about 83% higher.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 4.4%. Memory-chip manufacturer Kioxia plunged 18%, extending a July decline that has cut its share price roughly in half.
The global reach of the AI semiconductor sell-off shows that investors are reassessing the same risks across the United States, Europe and Asia rather than treating the weakness as an isolated move in a handful of stocks.
Oversupply Concerns Add Pressure
Investors are also beginning to consider whether the semiconductor industry could move from shortage to oversupply. Leading chipmakers continue announcing major expansion projects designed to meet anticipated demand for high-performance memory and AI computing infrastructure.
SK Hynix and Samsung reportedly plan to construct two new semiconductor plants each in South Korea. The projects form part of a combined 800 trillion won investment—approximately $548 billion—intended to double their production capacity for DRAM chips over the next five years.
While that expansion reflects confidence in long-term demand, it also introduces the possibility that supply could eventually grow faster than expected. Semiconductor cycles have historically been vulnerable to periods of aggressive capacity expansion followed by weaker pricing, excess inventories and pressure on profit margins.
What Traders Should Watch Next
The immediate focus will turn to earnings results and spending guidance from the largest technology companies. Traders should pay particular attention to commentary surrounding AI capital expenditures, data-center demand, borrowing requirements, free cash flow and projected returns on infrastructure investment.
Price action will be equally important. A sustained recovery in semiconductor leaders could indicate that the recent decline is a valuation reset within a continuing long-term uptrend. Continued failures at resistance, expanding downside volume and additional breaks of major support levels would suggest that institutional investors are still reducing exposure.
The divergence between Apple and the semiconductor group may also provide useful information. Continued relative strength in Apple could confirm that capital is rotating within the technology sector rather than leaving it entirely.
A Valuation Reset or a More Serious Warning?
The market is now attempting to determine whether the AI semiconductor sell-off represents a temporary correction after an extraordinary advance or the beginning of a more fundamental reassessment of the AI investment cycle.
Artificial intelligence remains one of the most significant long-term themes in the global economy. However, even transformational technologies can produce periods of excessive valuation, overcrowded positioning and overinvestment. For active traders, the next phase will be less about predicting the ultimate future of AI and more about following price action, liquidity and institutional behavior as the market recalibrates expectations.
