On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, U.S. stock markets experienced significant declines in response to newly imposed tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by approximately 1.6%, the S&P 500 fell by 1.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by 0.4%. 

These tariffs, effective immediately, include a 25% levy on most imports from Canada and Mexico, with a 10% tariff specifically on Canadian energy products. Additionally, tariffs on Chinese goods were increased from 10% to 20%.

Economists anticipate that these measures could lead to a U.S. recession within nine to twelve months, as the tariffs affect $1.4 trillion in imports, accounting for 5% of U.S. GDP. Concerns include disruptions to supply chains, potential hiring freezes, and reduced consumer spending, contributing to stagflation—a combination of stalled economic growth and rising inflation.

In retaliation, Canada announced 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, and China imposed additional tariffs on key U.S. agricultural products. Mexico is expected to announce its countermeasures in the coming days. 

The automotive industry is particularly vulnerable, with potential price increases of at least $3,000 for U.S. consumers and significant disruptions to North American supply chains.

Overall, these developments have heightened fears of a global economic slowdown, with investors closely monitoring the situation for further implications.
