GOOG: A Small Loss—and an Important Order-Flow Lesson

Our GOOG plan called for a short as the price moved from the central pivot toward the lower volatility bands. Instead, the stock opened sharply below the pivot and immediately reversed, producing a powerful rally of roughly $12 from its opening low.

After GOOG retraced and began consolidating beneath the central pivot, we attempted the planned short with a deliberately tight stop. The trade failed, resulting in a loss of approximately $1 per share—but the limited risk was appropriate given what Bookmap was revealing.

Nearly 2 million shares traded near the pivot, with no meaningful sell-side liquidity appearing on the order book. Price seemed temporarily contained by algorithmic activity rather than genuine overhead supply. Above the pivot, the liquidity map showed large open spaces with very little resistance, while a substantial buy order remained below the market.

The message was clear: if GOOG broke above the pivot and the remaining sell liquidity began to pull, price would have an easy path higher. That is exactly why the trade required a tight stop. Although the short did not work, recognizing the lack of overhead liquidity kept the loss manageable and prevented it from running through the entire volatility-band range.

Today's Trading Recap

Market Recap — Friday, September 18, 2026

U.S. stocks finished a volatile week with a mixed session Friday as investors continued to digest the Federal Reserve’s first interest-rate increase in three years while keeping a close eye on Treasury yields and crude oil.

The S&P 500 gained 0.2% to 7,650.50, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4% to 26,522.55. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2% to 51,682.64, and the Russell 2000 fell roughly 0.5%.

Technology and semiconductor stocks provided much of the support, continuing the rebound that began Thursday. But underneath the major averages, market breadth remained relatively weak as investors showed less enthusiasm for economically sensitive and smaller-cap stocks.

The biggest headwind remained interest rates. The 10-year Treasury yield moved back toward the psychologically important 5% level, reinforcing concerns that borrowing costs could remain elevated even after the Fed’s latest rate increase. Markets are now debating whether another hike could come later this year.

Oil remained another major variable. Crude prices backed away from their recent highs but remained near $100 per barrel as Middle East tensions continued to maintain an inflationary risk premium in energy markets. The combination of elevated oil prices and high bond yields continues to create a difficult backdrop for equities.

For the week, the S&P 500 declined about 0.1%, the Dow lost 1.7%, and the Russell 2000 dropped 1.5%, while the Nasdaq gained approximately 0.7%.

Bottom line: Friday’s tape showed continued resilience in technology, but the broader market remains caught between strong AI-related momentum and a macro environment dominated by 5% Treasury yields, elevated oil prices and the prospect of additional Fed tightening. Those crosscurrents are likely to keep volatility elevated heading into next week.
